NCBI’s vision is for people who are blind and vision impaired to have the same opportunities, rights and choices as others to fully participate in society. NCBI listens to people who use our services, staff members, volunteers and all other stakeholders and collaborates with them in design and delivery of services and all related activities. NCBI acknowledges and respects the right of people to make choices about their lives, We will do everything in our power to support people who are blind and vision impaired in exercising this right. NCBI carries out is work in an open manner and is accountable to all stakeholders for our actions and decisions and is committed to attaining excellence in everything we do through our policies, procedures and staff.

ABOUT OUR SERVICE

 

Describe the type of service you deliver

NCBI offers a range of services nationwide

*Community Based Services- these are a range of services to assist people with vision impairment to adapt to their situation and maintain their independence. These services include advice and information as well as emotional and practical support. Our community based staff act as the key link between the people we work with and the services we provide

*Low Vision Service- Regionally based low vision service can be visited by anyone experiencing difficulty with their eyesight. An optometrist assesses a person’s vision and with other staff evaluates the impact of sight loss before prescribing low vision and technical aids that can assist the person in their daily live.

*Rehabilitation and Mobility Training- offers training in mobility and independent living skills providing practical solutions to enable people with sight loss to carry out everyday tasks safely and independently. Professional and peer counselling

NCBI Library- NCBI libraries provide a national Braille, audio and large print book service to 5,000 people throughout the country

*Media Conversion Service- Provides a Braille unit and five audio recording studios and is the largest provider of Braille and audio material in Ireland

*Assistive Technology – A range of assistive technology solutions is available to assist people in accessing information and communicating independently.

* Centre for Inclusive Technology (CFIT) – NCBI promotes the accessible design of technology for use by everyone including people with disabilities. CFIT works with public and private organisations to establish standards and to ensure that technologies are accessible- www.cfit.ie

*Resource Centres – NCBI operates a number of training and resource centres which provide a range of courses, programmes and activities including computer training, fitness classes and art.

*Employment – NCBI provides advice to both employers and employees on application procedures, interviews and career advancement, as well as advice on adaptations can be made to assist a person with vision impairment in the work place and on the grants that may be available.

Who are your typical clients/service users?

About 18% of people using NCBI services are completely blind, while 82% have varying degrees of usable vision.

What makes your service different to that provided by others?

NCBI holds the national register of the blind in Ireland and provides a broad range of unique services while also working in collaboration with the other three key agencies in service provision to people who are blind or vision impaired through the Vision Impaired Service Providers Alliance (VISPA). VISPA works to ensure that the member organisations do not duplicate each others work.

What is your specific expertise?

As a community Resource Worker I act as a link between the person with a vision impairment and the services that NCBI provides and am involved in assessment of the service users needs.

How long are you involved in the sector?
